What exactly failed?
Ask for the specific component and the test that identified it, not a general statement that the heater is old.

Most no-hot-water calls are a component, not a tank. On a gas unit that is usually a thermocouple, a pilot assembly or a gas control valve. On an electric unit it is typically an element or a thermostat, and sometimes just a tripped high-limit switch that points at something else. Those parts are available, the repair is quick and the rest of the heater keeps doing its job.
Rumbling and a shorter hot shower often mean sediment, not failure. Draining it out can bring back capacity on a tank that is otherwise sound. A drip from the temperature and pressure relief line is also worth investigating rather than replacing around, because it can be telling you the incoming pressure is too high or there is no working expansion tank.

A tank that is rusted through has no repair. Once the steel shell is weeping, the only question left is how quickly it gets swapped and whether anything around it was damaged on the way. The same is true of a heater that is past its service life and has already had two or three component failures; each repair buys less time than the last one.
Two things are specific to Denver. First, a gas water heater here has to be rated or adjusted for high-altitude combustion, so if the current unit was installed without that in mind, a replacement is a chance to correct it. Second, these units almost always sit in a basement utility room, which means a failed tank quietly soaks a finished floor or runs into a floor drain. Ask whether a drip pan with a drain line is possible where yours stands.
