Finding the actual break
Water travels along joists and pipe runs, so the wet ceiling is rarely under the split. The line is isolated and pressure tested to locate the failure before anything is cut open.
Repairing or replacing the run
A single clean split can often be cut out and repaired. A line that froze and burst in several places, or galvanized pipe that is corroding throughout, is better replaced along the run.

What should I do while waiting for a plumber?
Close the main shutoff, then open a low faucet such as a basement or laundry tub to drain the pressure out of the system. Keep away from standing water near outlets, panels or the furnace, and do not use extension cords in a wet room. If you cannot find the shutoff, tell us on the call and we will walk you through it.
What makes burst pipe repair cost more or less?

Can a frozen pipe be saved before it splits?
Sometimes. If a faucet has gone to a trickle in a cold snap but nothing has burst yet, leave the faucet open, warm the room and call for help. Do not use an open flame on a pipe. Will the repair be finished in one visit?
